From Victorian Formality to Fresh, Modern Living

How gray, white, and navy blue transformed one living room into a welcoming new retreat
When a client invited me to give her living room a makeover, she had one clear goal: she was ready to move away from her traditional Victorian décor and embrace a fresher, more current look. She wanted the room to feel renewed while still remaining comfortable, elegant, and welcoming.
A Fresh Perspective

During our in-home consultation, I immediately saw the room’s potential. The existing furnishings and decorative details had served the space well, but the living area needed a fresh uplift. Together, we discussed her preferences, how she used the room, and the atmosphere she wanted to create. After the consultation and letter of agreement were complete, I began developing the transformation.
Starting with a Clean Slate
We removed nearly everything from the room, keeping only the console fireplace as an anchor. Clearing the space allowed us to rethink the layout, introduce softer lines, and build a cohesive design around a completely new color story.
A Palette That Brought the Room to Life
The combination of gray, white, and navy blue instantly brought new life to the living area. Gray created a calm, versatile foundation; white added brightness; and navy introduced depth and sophistication. Together, the colors felt polished without making the room feel formal or uninviting.
Two kidney-shaped sofas became the room’s standout pieces, adding graceful curves and an updated silhouette. Navy blue accent chairs provided a rich contrast, while a round coffee table with a white-and-gray marble finish introduced a crisp, refined focal point. Underneath it all, a gray, white, and blue area rug tied the palette together and beautifully defined the seating area.
The Final Result

The finished living room feels lighter, more open, and completely refreshed. By replacing the heavier Victorian influence with curved modern seating, a balanced color palette, and carefully chosen statement pieces, we created a space that feels both stylish and livable. This makeover is a wonderful reminder that a thoughtful design can honor the character of a home while giving its owner an entirely new way to enjoy it.
